Automotivation
Sep. 9th, 2012 04:24 pmSome other plans fell through, so I decided to work on the old Red Menace (1990 5.0 LX red Mustang hatchback) today.
First couple of rotations during the cranking were unusually slow, but then it increased to almost normal. Think the engine had just been sitting too long. Started in about two seconds of cranking despite this, and ammeter didn't show much charging afterwards. Checked battery cells and the electrolyte level is fine.
Backed car out from under the carport onto the working space of the driveway, then left it running while I cleaned the windows and refilled the windshield washer reservoir. By that time the ammeter showed full charge and the temp was up to normal operating range. Shut engine off and started topping off the tires.
Left front was a bit low, got it filled. Left rear was *very* low. Got it almost filled, and the tube on foot pump broke off just past the collar around the nozzle at the pump end. Glued it back with Lock-Tite silicone adhesive. Will wait two hours and see if that works. Meanwhile, the Red Menace is sitting there in the shade, looking desperately in need of a good washing (not to mention some body work to replace the rusted parts).
