Italy’s government has opened Pompeii to private ventures after cutting its restoration funding from $75 million to $15 million. The past several years, thousands of experts all over the world have been calling for a increase in funding to fight deterioration of the buried city due to weather, tourists and looters. Instead, they do this. It's an international disgrace.

Of course, Italy is far from the only guilty party. Nearly every ancient Native American site has been looted, because the authorities responsible for their protection can't get enough money to hire the people needed.

If even one percent of the bailout had been diverted to the cause of archeological preservation such crimes would have been essentially stopped.
