Okay, that was weird. Was out shooting my HP-35 in .40 S&W this morning. The third round went Pffftt!! instead of Bang! and smoke came out of the back of the gun.
I did the standard "wait to see if it hangfires" drill, then cleared the gun. I half expected the bullet to be lodged in the barrel. Fortunately, it was still firmly seated in the mouth of the cartridge.
What was also still firmly seated was the primer. Sideways. This not only resulted in the failure of the cartridge to fire, with some mildly dramatic special effects, but the escaping gasses spewed gun oil out the back and side of the gun, spattering small drops around the outside of the frame. The gun wasn't hurt, of course, besides being made dirty in an unusual way.
I'd heard of this happening, but never seen one before, and neither had the other shooter there.
This was brand new, factory ammunition from a major brand name.
I'm not sure how many total rounds I've fired in my life - probably between 10k and 20k - and this is the first time I've had this happen. (Note that I've occasionally done this myself when reloading, but I inspect my work and catch the problem.)
