Drove the Red Menace (1990 5.0 Mustang hatchback) this morning, 'cause I thought it could use the exercise. It's got a small, intermittent leak in the power steering system.

I kept noticing small amounts of smoke occasionally coming out from around the hood. Checking the engine compartment, I discovered something had sprayed down the left side of the engine. At first I thought it might be brake fluid, but the fittings, while rusty, are dry. I remembered that the power steering pump had been a bit noisier than usual, so started the car and turned the wheel. Voila! Smoke!

It only sprays when I turn the wheel, and I can't really see what's happening, so I may need help to find the actual leak. Meanwhile I'm going to top off the fluid and drive it some more.

I'm hoping it's just a dry seal, and after running some and sitting for a while it will take up and stop leaking.

Well, I lost that bet.

A few minutes ago I went out to spray poison ivy with the Roundup I bought this afternoon. Roundup is fine as long as there's no rain for 30 minutes after application.

Guess what happened fifteen minutes after I started spraying?

I have plenty to go 'round again in the morning.
