Stupid Pedestrian Tricks

I keep seeing this. In fact, I watch for it in dread. Someone getting in or out of a car will step into traffic. Sometimes they even look, first, see the oncoming vehicles, and do it anyway. Most of the time they aren't even talking on cell phones. The worst are the ones who walk out into the street from between parked cars, turn, look, see something coming, and open the car door anyway.

I once saw someone do this with a garbage truck on a narrow, one-way lane. The garbage truck had to make a quick stop, because with the door open there wasn't room to go through without hitting something.

What - besides the whistling wind - goes through the minds of these people?!
