Raising the Bridge

They're going to yield to the oblivious and raise the bridge:

Of course, *after* they raise the bridge generations of truck drivers will avoid that route due to increasingly vague warnings passed down and no longer appropriate.

How are they gonna raise it? It's not like you can just lift it a foot with a short slope on each side. Trains don't *do* that.

And digging the road deeper requires excavating a fair bit on either side.

So whatever they do they're gonna have to modify a block or so of street or a half mile or so of railroad roadbed.

That's a big part of the reason nothing has been done to the railroad before. The highway would be equally difficult to lower, due to underground utilities.

So they put up warning signs. Then lights which flash when an overheight vehicle is detected. Then a steel beam to stop overheight vehicles before they can hit the bridge.
