The July/August issue of _Discover_ has a letter commenting on an article in the previous issue, which gave an overview of the search for extrasolar planets. The writer stated, flatly, that astronomers had already discovered too many planets they could never visit or send probes to, so they might as well stop. Oh, and cancel the Kepler probe, too.

There is a subset of people who don't want anyone to leave Earth, for whom the mere concept is abhorrent, and do their best to convince everyone else. Such horrible, small minds.

Go track down a copy of The Green Hills of Earth and read "Columbus Was a Dope". It might be in Menace From Earth (I re-read a combined edition recently, so I can't be positive which it was in)
