Something is a Couple of Thousandths Off
Mar. 28th, 2014 04:55 pmWent to the range this afternoon, taking my M-1911 in .45 ACP out for the first time in several years. It ran fine on factory ammo, but would *not* work with any of my recent handloads. The slide just wouldn't go fully into battery.
Got back home and tried tinkering with some of those handloads, straightening the case, adding crimp, pushing the bullet deeper. No joy. It would go in the chamber and sound like it seated properly (making that distinctive "Plook!" sound) but the slide would not go fully forward, the same as at the range. Meanwhile, it would work right every time with factory ammo or snap caps.
The same reloaded ammo works perfectly in my H&K USP-45.
Still don't know what the problem is, but since the M-1911 works fine with factory ammo and the USP-45 - which I shoot more often these days - works fine with both factory and reloaded, I'm not really worried. Just puzzled.
