Deeper and Deeper

I've been digging in my main flower bed for over a week (not counting the days off for that gut bug) and I'm still finding things that look like props from a cheap horror movie.

Not sure how deep the worst roots are. I give up once I hit the hardpacked clay about four feet down and just break or cut 'em off.

Good grief. What sort of plants did you have growing there? A scion of Yggdrasil?
