Cultural Ignorance

stickmakerI'm not a particularly world-aware person, but the naivete of some folks astounds even me.
I was listening to a segment on _Morning Edition_ today about a serial rapist in a Mexican village, which most likely wouldn't have made the news if some of the victims hadn't been members of a US artist's colony. These women were astounded that they weren't safe in "grandmotherly" Mexico.
Huh? This is one of the most patriarchal, least-egalitarian nations in the northern hemisphere. The Mexican culture is infamous for its poor treatment of minorities and women.
They were further outraged that not only were the police not taking the matter seriously but were making jokes about the assault in the women's presence and telling them to their face they brought the rape on themselves for the way they dress and act.
And this was a surprise to them...
Yes, I'm sorry they were raped. I hope the bastard is caught and castrated. But why didn't these women know there were problems of this sort before they even left the US?!
