Troublesome Calls
Feb. 18th, 2008 04:27 pmMy Mother called a few minutes ago. She said she'd had a scare, and wanted to tell me about it. She had a mammogram last week, and today the nurse at her doctor's office called and told her she needed another one in _six months_!
I waited for her to tell me the scary part, but she went on about how she had called the lab and made the appointment and on and on. I finally asked her what had been so scary, and she said "They didn't tell me it wasn't cancer!"
I pointed out that they hadn't had her come in for a biopsy right away, but scheduled her for a follow-up mammogram in six months. Turns out she'd asked the testing lab when she called, and _they'd_ told her it wasn't cancer, but she was very upset that the nurse who first called hadn't done that.
While she was talking her voice cut out several times. I said "Your signal is breaking up." No response, except that she kept talking about other things. I asked "Can you hear me?" Again, she just kept talking. "Can you hear me?" "No," she said, and resumed talking about something unrelated.
"If you couldn't hear me, why did you say 'No.'?" "Oh, I heard an echo."
She hung up shortly after that. Then called me right back to tell me something else.
I'd worry she's getting senile, except she's been like this at least as long as I've known her.
