New Building Woes and Guesses
Jul. 31st, 2006 12:24 pmThe new Transportation Cabinet Building in downtown Frankfort is a good concept badly executed. Consolidating the employees and agencies in one place was long needed. However, the architect had a number of inappropriate ideas and the furniture committee were all below average height and easily impressed by price tags. (They may not have tried any of the furniture at all, if the one attempt by three of them to convince a fellow just up the aisle from me that the keyboard tray would do something we all knew it couldn't is any indication. One woman repeatedly yanked on his tray to get it go go higher, when anyone who had used them knew that was it as far as altitude goes.)
There are several features in the new building which give it an air of being unfinished. The support posts for the large, ornate metal awning over the walkway in front of the east portion run all the way to the cross street. But the last couple don't have the cover; just the posts.
The decorative walls flanking the front steps and the walkway to the western entrance have brass (Bronze?) fittings which seem intended to support decorative railing. Only there's no railing.
And so on...
Friday they finally delivered the decorative, abstract sculpture for the bullseye at the west end of the building, unloading it in the middle of afternoon rush hour. (Idiots...) Only, unless there's more deliveries due, when assembled it will also look unfinished. It's supposed to represent all the forms of transportation the Cabinet handles, but it looks like a swoop of stainless steel with an eagle's face on one end.
