I've been wanting a digital camera for a while. My Sony camcorder will take 3.2MP still images, but I'm used to 35mm film, which approaches 14MP.

Sony bought Konica Minolta a short while back, and modified a Maxxum digital SLR design into the Sony Alpha. This has received rave reviews in photography magazines, and I was able to purchase one Dec. 26 for under $650, from Amazon. It arrived today (Friday) and so far I'm happy. (Yeah, it's only 10.2MP, but I still have my 35mm cameras for *real* photography. ;-)

UPS tried to deliver this yesterday while I was at work, and left a note that they'd try again this (Friday) afternoon. I have an appointment at the vet's this afternoon, and half thought about calling to see if I could get in this morning. However, the appointment is during a period when UPS rarely arrives here, so I decided not to. Boy, am I glad I made that decision! I was sitting at my iMac a little after 10 AM when I heard something suspiciously like a UPS truck. I looked outside, and yes, it was a UPS truck! Yay!

One reason - besides the reviews - I wanted this camera is that it is compatible with both the 35mm Maxxum stuff and the Sony camcorder stuff I already have. Well, theoretically. The first lens and battery I tried both wouldn't work. However, the second lens (this one actually made by Minolta) and the battery which came with the camera (I charged it for half an hour first) did. So did the Sony memory stick my camcorder uses for still images (the Alpha came with an adapter).

I set the time/date and took two shots and viewed them, then shut everything down and put the battery back in the charger. Will give the camera a real test later.
