Actually, from the Wiki entry, Apparently they *did* give some details in a few episodes. General Reed had a fit of incompetence (Alzheimers or something) and that's what got them all killed.
The main character won't talk about it (and didn't raise a defense at his court martial) because he doesn't want to drag the general's name thru the mud.
Sort of a "he really fucked up this time, but he wasn't well at the time" thing.
Hadn't thought of Ghost Riders in the Sky as part of the inspiration.
