Worrying Signs
May. 28th, 2019 09:24 amLet me say up front that the following scenario is unlikely. It might make a good premise for a story, but it won't happen. I hope.
The European Union is taken over by extreme conservatives. They change their name to United Europe and begin recruiting other European nations to join them, often using unethical methods. This included financial, legal and even physical intimidation. Within a decade, they are openly using force to incorporate the weakest of their neighbors who have refused to join on their own. Other nations in Europe - and elsewhere - try to persuade United Europe to stop. The UE says they will, but instead wait a few months then turn their attentions in another direction. Each time. Finally, reluctantly, the remaining few non UE nations declare war. However, the UE responds with immediate use of force, obviously having prepared for this. Great Britain and a few nations in northern and eastern Europe remain free, barely. Some of the UE's neighbors fall quickly. Some hold out for a while. All seem doomed. The Chunnel is blown by Britain to prevent its use for invasion.
The US and Russia declare their support of Britain and its few other remaining allies. They begin preparing for a long, hard war. Meanwhile, China waits patiently, gleefully rubbing its figurative hands together.
