Yuck!

Spent most an hour this early evening elbow-deep in my basement floor drain. The sewer pipe under my basement floor has a location which forms a clog about every other year, and the only way to reach it is down the drain and around two bends. (Well, I could tear out a section of the concrete floor. Again. Once was enough for me, thank you.)

The best tool I've found for the job is a small garden hose with one end cut off. The other attaches to the water heater. If I can get the cut-off end against the clog and turn the water on, that will blast the clog loose. This requires sticking my arm into the drain to guide the hose around the curves. Yes, "Yuck!" It still has to be done.

Tolerances are so tight I can't wear gloves (well, I could wear those disposable latex gloves, but they'd just fill with sewage). There's no sharp edges, but it's all old, rough pipe. You better believe I scrub down well after doing these jobs.

This clog required that treatment *three times* today before the toilet would flush properly.

Most people just don't appreciate their utilities enough.
