Help Recover Space Program History
Mar. 1st, 2013 07:33 pmLOIRP (the Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project) is saving an important part of the Apollo Program. The Lunar Orbiters took high-resolution images of the Moon to scout out good candidates for the manned landings. However, many of the images were never printed at full resolution or examined closely. The LOIRP has put together equipment to scan the tapes these images were stored on before they are unreadable, and produce a catalog of high-resolution images. The people working on the project call it technoarcheology.
These recovered images have already proven valuable in finding differences between the Moon as it was in the Sixties and as modern lunar orbiters see it now.
