Bloody Mess
Feb. 15th, 2012 09:40 amSome mildly unsettling medical stuff.
Late in 2010 I started having nosebleeds. Before this I almost never had those, and when I did it was usually because I scratched or scraped or bumped the septum. However, a year and a third ago I began having nosebleeds pretty frequently, most of them minor but a few worrying. I started keeping QuickClot Nosebleed around, which stopped even the worst gushers quickly.
Yes, I saw a doctor (actually, the Physician's Assistant who works for my doctor) who couldn't find a reason or even where the blood was coming from. Neither could my allergist. Fortunately, the nosebleeds stopped soon after this.
I had a couple of minor nosebleeds in late 2011, but nothing more.
Monday, I had a couple of minor nosebleeds. Tuesday I had a minor and a moderate. Then came this morning...
I went to bed an hour early last night 'cause I wasn't feeling well (ate something which disagreed with me). Woke two hours early, went to the john, and (very gently) blew my nose. No blood. I tossed the tissue and started to leave... and felt the blood dripping from my nose. Got about a tablespoon on the floor before I could grab another tissue. After quickly stuffing that in my nose I got out the nosebleed stopper.
That did the trick. However, while waiting the required time I sneezed repeatedly. Each sneeze restarted the nosebleed. I actually had to replace the nosebleed stopper because it became saturated with a combination of blood and mucus. The second one finally did the trick, and after waiting a while to make sure I took the QuickClot out and went to bed. (You can't leave these things in long-term. Besides being uncomfortable, the instructions are stern about not using one for more than an hour.)
Didn't get back soundly to sleep, but I did doze a lot, so hopefully I'll be okay on the sleep front. However, since rising I've had a minor and a moderate nosebleed. Neither required the QuickClot to stop. A tissue and gentle pressure did the trick in short order.
I suspect that the hole in my septum (from using Rhinocort several years ago) is healing over, but because there's no cartilage under it, the soft tissue tears easily. The hole in the cartilage is slowly closing, so maybe the nosebleed problem will eventually go away. I think I'll mention this when I go get my allergy shot tomorrow. Though if I get another serious bleed before that I'll go straight in.
