Getting a Grip
Dec. 4th, 2007 05:56 pmStill stuck at home with this vaguely cold-like bug. Bored, and reading a gun magazine, I started wondering about the fit of the grips of various handguns I have.
Maybe it's just because it's my first real gun, but my old colt M-1911 Mark IV Series 80 still fits my hand very well, indeed. My two Browning HP-35s are fairly good fits, but not up to the Colt's. (Surprising, considering the original design for both models came from the same man.) The second-best fitting is the HK P7 PSP. This is a _very_ different gun from the Colt, yet it fills my hand well without being awkward, and points naturally.
My new HK USP _is_ awkward. It's an upscale, expensive, fancy "combat" gun which is doesn't fit my strong hand well, and offers little place for my off hand.
Most of the other handguns have grips which are too small for me, especially the matched pair of S&W Terrier revolvers. The Ruger Mark II .22 LR target pistol has a comfortable grip (no surprise). The grip on the .22 target revolver is too small in both girth and length. Didn't dig out the two cap and ball revolvers. My maternal grandmother's old .32ACP isn't bad, though a bit too small.
Note that my hands are a bit unusual. They're a bit above average size, very thin with long fingers. So even a grip large enough for my palm might be too short for my fingers.
