Dec. 8th, 2006 12:12 pmWell, I'm back driving the old Red Menace (1990 5.0 Mustang hatchback) while the 2005 Mustang is in the shop. I had lunch with friends at Frisches yesterday, and when I tried to leave discovered that one of my brake calipers had frozen. (That is, seized. The cold may have contributed to the problem, but heating the caliper through friction by driving with the pads against the rotor didn't release it.) Fortunately, there's a Goodyear I've long done business with only a little more than a block from the Frisches. Unfortunately, even that short drive overheated the rotor, which was blue from head damage when the pulled the wheel off.
The rotor is the main problem. The car is so new that the replacement part is only available from Ford (the Goodyear guy called at least two parts places to check). Not only is it expensive, but it has to be shipped and won't be here until Monday at the earliest. (Durn holiday mail…) So, I left the 4.6 there and called my mother (who lives not far from the Goodyear store) to take me home. There I transferred to the Red Menace for the duration.
The weirdest part of this was that during the trip my mother grouchily expressed irritation that I hadn't sold the 5.0. I manfully refrained from asking her what I'd be driving now if I had.
I'm checking on my warranty to see whether any of this will be covered, and if so whether I can have Goodyear do the work and still have it covered.
