A tale I heard long ago. Seems some company lab ordered a set of precision weights. We're talking one or two steps removed from the National Bureau of standards weights.

They arrived, carefully packed in a vacuum sealed case. Whereupon someone in receiving, noting how expensive they were, opened said case and proceeded to drill holes in them to attach metal asset tags. *megacringe*

Needless to say procedures were changed.
