Well, the forecast for today was rain and storms, so I planned to stay inside and do some work, including sweeping both upstairs and down.

Before I could even eat this morning, my Mother called with a plumbing problem.

I ate, shaved, dressed and went over and confirmed there was, indeed, a leak in a hot water line. I turned off the water heater (I wanted to leave the pilot on, but Mother insisted it be turned completely off) then the inlet valve to the water heater. She still had cold water, and a call to the plumber promised someone there in a couple of hours. Fortunately, the weather was nice, this all happening in an interval between storms. I took advantage of the situation with a quick trip to the grocery.

After getting home I was able to do some of the work planned, but noticed that the light over my basement workbench was dead. Not the bulb; that would work in another lamp I had, and the bulb from that wouldn't work in the workbench fixture. The lamp itself just wouldn't come on. I decided to replace it with the other lamp, which is one of two or three utility fluorescent fixtures I had laying around.

Both lamps use the same type of mount - you align two large holes in back with the protruding heads of screws, then slide over to put heads in a narrower channel. Both will even work with the same size screw. However, the distance between holes is different. So I had to do some drilling.

As I was finishing that, Mother called. The plumber had removed the problem (hot water hose to the built-in dishwasher) and cut that part of the line off until he could get a new hose (which should have been replaced when this dishwasher was installed a few years ago, but the old, original hose was still in place and had burst; thank you, Sears). However, he needed a long time and much effort to relight the pilot (which is why I wanted to leave it on). Mother now has hot water for everything but the dishwasher, and that should soon be added.

So, she has hot water, and I have light. I even did a little sweeping in the basement, and there's still time left in the day. Not a bad turnout. :-)
