I am quite fond of malt powder. I love having a malted instead of a milkshake, and actually keep malted milk powder around for adding to milkshakes at home.

I also keep some malted milk tablets on hand. I like them as an occasional snack (or sometimes I take a spoon of malted milk powder) and as part of the emergency rations I keep in my BOB and GHB. (That's the bugout bag I keep for emergency evacuations and the get home bag I keep in my car.)

Malted milk has a long history of being used as a nutritional supplement. Even after Pasteurization became nearly universal malted milk was often used to increase the nutrition of milk. It even became a treat (hence the use to make malteds at malt shops).

Malted milk was the original energy drink. The maltose and some of the other ingredients gave a nice lift with a great taste.

Malted milk tablets were used in military rations - especially emergency rations - in World War I and before and after. You could still find them in things like lifeboat rations well after World War II.

Today you can still buy several brands of malted milk powder in groceries. Tablets are more difficult. The only place I can find which manufactures Horlicks brand (Horlick was the man who invented malted milk and made several fortunes selling it) is in Japan. That company sells boxes of sealed envelopes, each with several flat tablets. Good for a snack at home or school or to keep in your travel kit.
