I wonder if diamond "plating" would be useful for the bore of a rifle or pistol? The hardness wouldn't hurt, and would likely preserve the rifling for a long time.
Corrosion resistance would be excellent too. Dealing with "leading" of the barrel would be much simpler as well.
Only worries I can see are that at the temps and pressures involved the diamond might burn away.
I predicted some years back that the use of diamond for semiconductor work (as I understand there are reasons to think that with the right dopants you could use diamond instead of silicon for semiconductors) would lead to a lot of "scrap" diamond being available.
This would still be true if they can make macroscale heat sinks and the like out of it.
So objects made of diamond could become fairly common. Not as gemstones, but as other objects. Want a diamond cup? Or a plate?
