Pluto's Status

Given that there are definitions of "planet" which would include Pluto while excluding all known similar bodies, I wonder if the panel discussing its status has an ulterior motive. Like, forcing schools to buy new science textbooks.

I still cannot comprehend the drive to make Chiron a "Planet". I've seen the probe photos since the early '80s in science mags, it's a disk shaped slice of Pluto itself, knocked off in an earlier impact. It is a former part of the body it is orbiting, and much smaller than Pluto. By that reasoning, I'm surprised they aren't clamoring for the moon to be Planet Luna... 9_9
