Fierce Kitty!

Heard a commotion in the basement about eight last night. Thought for a moment my queen cat was having another seizure. Turned out Motley was fine, if unsettled and up on a bench. The male, Ringtail, had cornered a very large - and apparently timid - raccoon, at least twice his own weight. Even had grey raccoon fur in his claws.

The sight was almost amusing. A nine year old, 11lb. housecat forcing a raccoon easily over 30lbs. into cowering behind an extension ladder.

I took the cats upstairs and closed the door. Back downstairs the raccoon had recovered its aplomb quickly and was calmly eating the cats' dry food. I chased him off and blocked the cat door with the portcullis. Then let the cats back down. Ringtail immediately went to the bottom of the steps and stared into the dark basement, making calling noises. I don't know if he wanted his playmate back, or wanted me to come down and make sure it was gone!

I usually block the door around sunset in warm weather, just to keep the raccoons and possums out. Looks like this recent warm spell has revived at least one of the former.

Could it be that the raccoon was just a little surprised over being confronted by Ringtail?
