A running gag in the films of the Marx Brothers involves Harpo having nearly anything in his coat: for instance, at various points in Horse Feathers Harpo pulls out: a wooden mallet, a coiled rope, a tie, a poster of a woman in her underwear, a cup of hot coffee, and a candle burning at both ends.

So it's an instance of the "if it's funny" principle of Toon physics? (Which can also apply to some live action films or stage magic, like the "if it's awesome" principle of Kung Fu movie physics.)
