Is Automatic Worse Than Manual?

It's my birthday (thank you) and this morning my e-mail inbox has several computer-generated well-wishes. Y'know, it's nice that they would think to include this in their programming, but it feels rather... perfunctory. Especially since all those I've seen so far are from companies and not individuals.
