I needed a few things from Kroger's, and my mother did as well, so I went about 10:30 this morning. I couldn't find the lunchmeat I like and there was no Campbell's vegetable soup for my mother. but otherwise the items I looked for were found. However, I suspect that a large proportion of the people at Kroger's this morning had never been in a supermarket before. Or driven in a parking lot, for that matter.
All the open checkout lanes had long lines (and most were open). So, I went through the self-checkout, which I normally do not do when I have produce. I actually needed help twice; once with my mother's bananas and once with a coupon the machine would not recognize, even though I followed the instructions. Both times the attendant had to enter a code.
I was bad enough, but other people using those machines had apparently never done so before. One woman kept activating the Call Attendant function, then denying she had done it. The attendant explained that something about her bags was doing it, but the woman denied that was happening. We were running the poor woman helping the self-checkouters ragged. We all - including the woman who kept activating the Call Attendant - thanked her on the way out.
So Mother got her stuff, and I got home with mine.
I'm gonna need bread and milk in a few days, and just hope things are less insane then.
