Freedom From Government Meddling

The founding fathers of the US had the position that it wasn't any business of government what someone's religion was, if anything. I'm pretty sure they'd also feel that whom someone marries is not the business of government. But how many politicians today actually know what the founding fathers wanted, much less care?
